GOA : Se Cathedral
Operating Hours:Monday - Sunday: 07:30 - 18:00
The Vibe:The biggest church in Old Goa, and the Golden Bell.
Commissioned to mark a Portuguese victory on the feast of St. Catherine, this is the largest church in Old Goa and among the largest in Asia. It took decades to complete.
The single surviving tower carries the Golden Bell, whose sound once reached across the old capital. Inside, a vast whitewashed nave keeps the air cool and echoing.
- Part of the Churches and Convents of Goa UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Houses the Golden Bell, the largest church bell in Goa
- Among the largest churches in Asia by floor area
- Reviewers regularly pair it with Bom Jesus as the two essential Old Goa stops
Fit For
- 🌍 Culture travellers: "The scale of Portuguese Goa at its height."
- 👵 Seniors: "Level nave, seating and shade throughout."
- 💕 Couples: "Quieter than the basilica, and two minutes away."
- 📸 Photographers: "A wide facade that needs distance to frame."
Highlights
- The Golden Bell in the surviving tower, the largest in Goa
- Cavernous main nave, the largest church interior in Old Goa
- Chapel of the Cross of Miracles, off the right aisle
- Gilded main altarpiece dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria
- The empty base where the second tower collapsed in 1776 — Hidden Gem
- The baptismal font near the entrance, associated with St. Francis Xavier's mission work
- About 10 km east of Panjim on the Old Goa Road, served by frequent buses and taxis.
- Entry is from the main square; the Old Palace of the Archbishop links it to St. Francis of Assisi next door.
- Free parking in the complex, busiest between 10:30 and 15:00 in peak season.
Food & Coffee Shops
Informal stalls in front of the cathedral sell cold drinks and snacks; nothing inside.
Plan a full meal back in Panjim rather than at the complex.
Insider Tips
The complex is quietest before 10:00 and again after 16:00.
Mass times close off parts of the nave — check the board at the door on arrival.
Do the three churches in one loop; separate trips waste the drive from the coast.
Photography Tips
The facade is wide and low — step well back into the square to frame it whole.
Photography stops during services; confirm before setting up inside.
