The Vibe:Four centuries of laterite, and a saint at rest.
Begun in 1594 and consecrated in 1605, this was the great Jesuit monument of Portuguese India. It holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier and anchors the Old Goa complex.
Bare laterite outside gives way to gilded altarwork and cool, dim air inside. Voices drop as visitors gather beneath the silver casket in the south transept.
- Part of the Churches and Convents of Goa UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Ranked the number one attraction in its Old Goa listing on TripAdvisor
- Holds the mausoleum of St. Francis Xavier, carried out for public exposition roughly once a decade
- Reviewers repeatedly describe it as the single unmissable stop away from the beaches
Fit For
- 🌍 Culture travellers: "The clearest surviving statement of Portuguese Goa."
- 👵 Seniors: "Level access, shade and seating inside."
- 💕 Couples: "Quiet early, and easy to pair with the two churches opposite."
- 📸 Photographers: "Exterior laterite reads best in morning light."
Highlights
- Mausoleum and silver casket of St. Francis Xavier, the reason most visitors come
- Baroque facade in exposed laterite, the only Old Goa church left unplastered outside
- Gilded main altar and the carved pulpit, both original to the early 1600s
- Attached art gallery in the convent block, usually far quieter than the nave — Hidden Gem
- Single-nave plan modelled on the Jesuit churches of Évora and Lisbon
- The upper-floor gallery above the sacristy, reached by a staircase most visitors walk straight past
- Old Goa sits about 10 km east of Panjim on the Old Goa Road; taxis and frequent local buses run from the Panjim bus stand.
- Free parking is available outside the church compound, filling up mid-morning in peak season.
- Entry is through the main west door off the compound; no ticket counter or queue system operates.
Food & Coffee Shops
Food stalls and cold-drink vendors set up opposite the church complex; nothing formal, and none inside.
For a sit-down meal, plan to return toward Panjim — the Old Goa complex has no restaurants of note.
