The Vibe:Built to watch the monsoon arrive. ⛈

Maharana Sajjan Singh raised this hilltop palace in 1884 to track monsoon clouds over the Aravallis, and to serve as an astronomical observatory. The plan for a nine-storey structure was abandoned when he died.
The road climbs through dry scrub before the whole lake basin opens at once. Wind moves constantly across the terraces, and the temperature drops noticeably at the top.

  • Built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh to watch monsoon clouds gather
  • Rated 4.4 across more than 34,000 Google reviews — the largest review base in Udaipur
  • Sits inside the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary, which charges its own entry
  • Featured as a location in the James Bond film Octopussy

Highlights

  • The panorama over Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar and Badi Lake — the reason to come
  • Sunset from the upper terraces — the palace's busiest and best hour
  • The Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary approach — deer and peacocks along the climb
  • Marble pillars and domed turrets — the interior is bare, so the fabric is the interest
  • The rainwater harvesting tank built into the structure — rarely pointed out — Hidden Gem
