Rajasthan's second city sits about 250 km north, at the edge of the Thar. Most travellers reach it from Udaipur as a one-way transfer rather than a day trip, breaking the drive at Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh.
The road climbs out of the Aravallis into progressively drier country. Jodhpur announces itself with Mehrangarh on its rock and indigo houses spreading below.
