The Vibe:Mewar's first capital, and its greatest loss.

Mewar ruled from here until 1568, when Akbar's siege forced Udai Singh II to move the capital and found Udaipur. The fort covers roughly seven hundred acres on a plateau above the plain, and was besieged three times.
The plateau is vast and largely open, with palaces and temples scattered across it rather than clustered. Wind moves over dry ground, and distances between monuments are longer than they look.

  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest fort in India by area
  • Mewar's capital until Akbar's siege of 1568 forced the move to Udaipur
  • Rated 4.6 across more than 54,000 Google reviews
  • The Vijay Stambh tower was raised in the fifteenth century to mark a victory

Fit For

  • 🌍 Culture travellers: "The site the whole Mewar story starts from."
  • 💕 Couples: "Sunset from the ramparts, with the plain spread below."
  • 🧳 Solo: "A long day, best done with a guide and a vehicle."
  • 📸 Photographers: "The Vijay Stambh and Padmini's Palace across open ground."

Highlights

  • Vijay Stambh — the nine-storey victory tower, the fort's defining monument
  • Kirti Stambh — the older Jain tower of fame, less visited than its neighbour
  • Rani Padmini's Palace — the water palace tied to the fort's best-known legend
  • Gaumukh Kund — the spring-fed reservoir that supplied the fort through sieges
  • Kalika Mata and Meera temples — both still in worship inside the walls
