Raja Man Singh I begins Amber Palace. The Kachwaha court rules from the hills, and sets the template for everything Jaipur builds later.
Sawai Jai Singh II founds Jaipur on the plains. India's first planned city, laid out on a grid by scholar-architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya.
The walled city is washed terracotta pink to welcome the Prince of Wales. A law soon makes the colour permanent.
Jaipur becomes capital of the new state of Rajasthan. Princely rule ends, the palaces stay.
UNESCO inscribes the walled city as a World Heritage Site for its 18th-century town planning.

🎨 Pink Is the Law, Not a Choice: Inside the walls, buildings have to be repainted in the same terracotta wash. You'll see painters on bamboo ladders touching up shopfronts all year.
🧵 Streets Named After Their Trade: Lanes are labelled by craft — bangle makers, marble carvers, jewellers, spice sellers. Ask for the trade, not the address.
🔥 Bangles Shaped Over Coal: In the bangle lane, men soften lac over small coal fires and the women run the shopfronts. The best stalls are the ones the women own.
🔔 Temples That Close for a Nap: The big Krishna temples shut through the afternoon so the deity can rest, then reopen for evening aarti. The queue forms before the curtain does.
🙏 Khamma Ghani, Not Hello: The local greeting comes with folded hands. Say "ghani khamma" back and watch the room warm up.
🪁 Rooftops Turn Into Kite Decks: Around mid-January the sky fills with kites and every terrace has someone on it. Shops sell thread by the spool for weeks beforehand.
