INTRODUCTION

<p>Jaipur is a planned city, and it shows in how you move through it. The walled Old City sits on an eighteenth-century grid, so bazaars, palaces and observatories fall within a walkable square. Everything else spreads south and north along wide arterial roads. Distances are short by Indian city standards. Traffic, not geography, decides how long a day takes.</p> <p>Plan by zone rather than by ticking off sights. Give the Old City a full morning on foot, starting early while the light is soft and the lanes are quiet. Keep the fort belt north of the city — Amber, Nahargarh, Jaigarh — for a separate half-day with a car. Use C-Scheme, MI Road and Civil Lines for dining, galleries and shopping. Ride-hailing covers most links; the metro is quicker for the Old City run at peak hours.</p>

Getting There

LOCAL TRANSPORT

Jaipur Metro (Pink Line)
One line runs from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar across 11 stations and about 12 km. Trains run from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and fares sit between ₹10 and ₹30. Chandpole and Badi Chaupar drop you inside the walled city, which beats road traffic on the same route.
City Buses (JCTSL)
Low-floor AC and non-AC buses cover 27 routes across the city, running roughly 5:00 AM to 9:30 PM. Fares start at ₹5. Routes are useful once you know them, but signage is mostly in Hindi.
Auto-Rickshaws
The default for short hops and narrow Old City lanes. Meters are rarely used, so agree the fare before you sit down or book through an app. A prepaid counter operates outside Jaipur Junction railway station.
E-Rickshaws
Battery rickshaws work as feeders around metro stations and inside the bazaars. Rides are short and cheap. Fares are negotiated, not metered.
Cycle Rickshaws
Slow, open and suited to the Old City stretch between Chandpole and Johari Bazaar. Useful when you want to stop often for photographs. Settle the price first.
Car With Driver
The practical choice for the fort circuit and day trips. Full-day hire typically runs ₹1,200–₹3,500 depending on vehicle class. Book through your hotel or a licensed operator.

PAYMENTS

Credit Cards

Cards are accepted at hotels, malls, branded restaurants, fuel stations and larger retail. Visa and Mastercard have the widest coverage. American Express works at chain hotels and upmarket restaurants, but not reliably elsewhere.

Where Cards Fail
Bazaar stalls, auto-rickshaws, small eateries and most street vendors take cash or UPI only.
Contactless
Tap-to-pay is standard at organised retail. Terminals are handed to you rather than fixed at the counter.
Dynamic Currency Conversion
If the machine offers to bill in your home currency, decline and pay in rupees. The offered rate is worse than your bank's.

Cash

The currency is the Indian Rupee (INR, ₹). Cash still runs the bazaars, autos, tips, temple donations and roadside food.

Denominations To Carry
Keep ₹10, ₹20, ₹50 and ₹100 notes. Drivers and stallholders rarely hold change for a ₹500 note.
Largest Note
The ₹500 note is the highest denomination in normal circulation. The ₹2,000 note was withdrawn in 2023 and remains legal tender, but you will not receive one.
UPI
QR-code payments are near-universal, including at small stalls. Foreign visitors can use the UPI One World prepaid wallet, which needs a passport and visa but no Indian bank account.
Daily Float
₹2,000–₹3,000 in cash covers a typical sightseeing day for two, excluding shopping.

ATMs

Availability
Machines are common along MI Road, in C-Scheme, at malls, at the airport and beside bank branches. The Old City has fewer, and some run out of cash on weekends.
Networks
Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and Cirrus are widely supported. Look for a bank-branch machine rather than a standalone kiosk.
Fees
Expect a charge from the Indian operator plus your home bank's foreign withdrawal fee. Fewer, larger withdrawals cost less overall.
Withdrawal Limits
Per-transaction caps are common on foreign cards. Notify your bank of travel dates to avoid a security block.

Money Exchange

Change a small amount at the airport for the first taxi and tips, then use the city for the rest. Airport rates are the weakest you will see.

Where To Go
Licensed money changers cluster along MI Road and near the larger hotels. Banks offer fair rates but slower service.
Before You Change
Check the live rate on a currency app, then compare two or three counters. Ask for the net rupee figure after commission.
Paperwork
Carry your passport. Keep the encashment receipt if you plan to convert rupees back on departure.
Avoid
Anyone offering a better rate on the street or inside a shop. Unlicensed exchange is illegal and short-counting is the usual outcome.

Weather

Jaipur has a hot semi-arid climate with three clear seasons and a short monsoon. There is no coastal breeze to soften the summer.

Winter (November to February)
The best window for sightseeing. Days sit in the low twenties Celsius; nights can drop to 5–8°C. Pack layers, a proper jacket for early fort mornings, and sunglasses.
Spring And Summer (March to June)
March is warm and manageable. From April the heat climbs past 40°C, with May the hardest month. Pack loose cotton and linen, a wide-brimmed hat and high-SPF sunscreen.
Monsoon (July to September)
Rain arrives in short heavy bursts, often late in the day, with humidity between them. Temperatures ease into the low thirties. Pack quick-dry clothing, a compact umbrella and footwear with grip.
October
The transition month. Warm days, cooler evenings and thinner crowds before the winter season begins.

Rooftops across the city fill with kite flyers and the sky stays busy from morning to dusk. Competitions run at the Jal Mahal grounds. Book a rooftop in advance, as hotels sell the day as a package.
