The Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation established the museum in 1969 to hold the family's textiles, paintings, silver and armoury. It occupies the Mardana and Zenana wings of a complex the family still partly lives in.
Galleries open off courtyards rather than corridors, so daylight and shade alternate as you move. Glass cases, mirrorwork and painted walls compete for attention in every room.
