The Vibe:Puppets that have outlived the courts they entertained.

Founded in 1952 to keep Rajasthan's folk performance traditions from disappearing, this institute pairs a working puppet theatre with a museum of masks, instruments and tribal costume. It trains performers as well as hosting them.
Drums and a narrator's voice carry from the small amphitheatre while you are still in the galleries. Inside, strings jerk and kathputli figures fight, dance and dismember themselves.

  • Founded in 1952 as a folk-arts research and training institute, not a tourist theatre
  • Rated 4.3 across more than 9,000 Google reviews
  • Short puppet shows run through the day rather than on a single evening schedule
  • The museum holds puppets from other countries taught by its own performers

Fit For

  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Families: "Short puppet shows hold young children better than any museum."
  • 🌍 Culture travellers: "Kathputli, masks and tribal instruments under one roof."
  • 👵 Seniors: "A seated hour indoors between the outdoor lake stops."
  • 💕 Couples: "Inexpensive, quick and genuinely unlike the palace circuit."

Highlights

  • The kathputli puppet show — short performances running through the day, not just evenings
  • The mask and headdress gallery — tribal and ritual pieces from across Rajasthan
  • Folk instruments on display — many no longer played outside the institute
  • The amphitheatre itself — built for acoustics rather than scale
  • Foreign puppets given by performers the institute trained abroad — Hidden Gem
