The Vibe:France's great men and women, under a dome

Begun in 1757 as a royal church to Saint Geneviève, this neoclassical monument became a secular temple in the Revolution. It now honours the nation's great men and women.
Light falls through the coffered dome onto a vast, echoing nave. Below, the crypt is cool and still around the tombs of the illustrious.

  • The resting place of Voltaire, Rousseau, Hugo, Zola and Marie Curie
  • Home to Foucault's Pendulum, which proved the Earth's rotation in 1851
  • A neoclassical masterpiece by the architect Soufflot
  • Later burials include Simone Veil and Josephine Baker

Fit For

  • 🌍 Culture travellers: "The pantheon of French thought and science."
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Families: "Foucault's Pendulum turns science into spectacle."
  • 🧳 Solo: "A calm, reflective hour in the Latin Quarter."

Highlights

  • Foucault's Pendulum swinging beneath the dome
  • The crypt tombs of Voltaire, Rousseau, Hugo and Marie Curie
  • The colonnade panorama over the Left Bank, April to October
  • Puvis de Chavannes's murals of Saint Geneviève
  • David d'Angers's sculpted pediment outside — Hidden Gem
