The Vibe:France's great men and women, under a dome
Begun in 1757 as a royal church to Saint Geneviève, this neoclassical monument became a secular temple in the Revolution. It now honours the nation's great men and women.
Light falls through the coffered dome onto a vast, echoing nave. Below, the crypt is cool and still around the tombs of the illustrious.
- The resting place of Voltaire, Rousseau, Hugo, Zola and Marie Curie
- Home to Foucault's Pendulum, which proved the Earth's rotation in 1851
- A neoclassical masterpiece by the architect Soufflot
- Later burials include Simone Veil and Josephine Baker
