The Vibe:Byzantine ambition in striped London brick.
Not to be confused with Westminster Abbey half a mile east, England's principal Roman Catholic cathedral sits in the Victoria district. Its Byzantine-Revival brickwork and unfinished mosaic interior form the mother church of Catholic England and Wales.
Footsteps fall silent on marble floors; mosaics glint in chapel corners while other walls wait bare. Organ chords rise into the vault; the scent of incense lingers from the morning mass.
- • The largest Roman Catholic cathedral in England and Wales
- • Built in Byzantine-Revival style, distinctive among London's churches
- • Consecrated in 1910 after eight years of construction
- • Houses Eric Gill's celebrated Stations of the Cross sculptures

The cathedral was commissioned in 1894 by Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, Archbishop of Westminster. Architect John Francis Bentley travelled to Italy and the eastern Mediterranean for inspiration and produced a design unlike any other English church — Byzantine-Revival in style, built in less than a decade.
The striped brick and stone exterior was deliberately chosen to stand out against the dark stone of Westminster Abbey and other English churches
Eric Gill's Stations of the Cross, carved between 1914 and 1918, were controversial at first but are now considered masterpieces of 20th-century British sculpture
Funds for mosaic decoration ran out; over a century later, much of the upper interior remains bare brick as 'work in progress' — a unique feature among major cathedrals
The Campanile is named St Edward's Tower and contains a single bell cast in 1910 — Cardinal Vaughan's bell
