London: London Eye
Operating Hours:Monday - Sunday: 11:00 - 18:00. Summer and school holidays: 10:00 - 20:30
The Vibe:A slow revolution with London laid out below.
A wheel of 32 capsules lifts riders 135 metres above the Thames for a slow, 30-minute revolution. What opened as a 2000 Millennium landmark has become one of London's most distinctive silhouettes.
Capsules glide silently upward as the city unrolls — Parliament to the north, Tower Bridge east, Wembley Arch on a clear day. Inside, glass from every angle; outside, wind off the river.
- • Europe's tallest cantilevered observation wheel at 135 metres
- • Opened for the Millennium celebrations in March 2000
- • Hosts around 3 million riders annually
- • Ranked among the world's most popular paid attractions for two decades

Photography Tips
Shoot through the least-reflective side of the capsule — usually the curve opposite boarding
Disable flash entirely — reflections ruin every shot
Midday is best for detail; dusk brings out the illumination layer
The moment at the top gives the cleanest full-city composition

Explore Deeper
Designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield as a Millennium competition entry, the Eye was built as a five-year temporary structure. Public demand kept it permanent; it was the world's tallest observation wheel until 2006.
The capsules weigh 10 tonnes each and are mounted on the outside of the rim — not suspended below — giving uninterrupted views
The wheel is supported by a single 'A-frame' on one side only, with cable tensioning keeping the rim stable
Marriage proposals in private capsules average more than one per day according to operator data
The structure was floated down the Thames in sections and lifted into place over nine days in autumn 1999
