Explore Deeper
Beyond the view, the Singapore Flyer is a feat of engineering and cultural insight. Its story spans record-breaking construction and even feng shui influences, reflecting Singapore’s blend of innovation and tradition.
• Design & Capacity: The Flyer has 28 air-conditioned capsules, each holding up to 28 people
a number chosen for good luck (28 sounds like “easy prosperity” in Cantonese). One full revolution takes about 32 minutes.
• Record-Breaker: At 165m tall, it debuted in 2008 as the world’s tallest Ferris wheel, holding the title until 2014. It remains Asia’s largest observation wheel.
• Feng Shui Flip: Originally, the wheel rotated counterclockwise (viewed from Marina Bay), but in August 2008 operators reversed the direction on advice from feng shui masters to favor auspicious energy flowing into the city.
• Engineering Marvel: Built on reclaimed land, the Flyer’s foundation includes a special cylindrical shaft and massive spindle. Its construction required assembling the wheel rim in sections and lifting capsules by crane
an intricate process visible in early documentary footage.

• Lucky 28 – The Flyer’s 28 capsules and 28 passenger capacity were deliberately chosen as 28 is an auspicious number symbolizing “easy prosper” in Chinese culture.
• Slow & Steady – The rotation is so gentle (about 0.21 m/s) that you won’t feel movement much; a full circle ride lasts approximately 30 minutes.
• Far Views – On exceptionally clear days, you can glimpse parts of Johor (Malaysia) and the Indonesian Riau Islands from the top of the Flyer, beyond Singapore’s waters.
